1. ALWAYS dress up or dress weird. ALWAYS
2. Be prepared to play for 3-4 hours. Sometimes it takes that to make it worth your while.
3. Always be playing. Take a 5 here or there but you won't get $ while you're resting.
4. Learn 5 or 6 songs that represent different artists: Muddy, Elmore, Stevie etc so that when you get a request, you can play at least ONE song by that artist.
5. Prime the pump with ones.
6. Have flashing lights on your tip jar at night.
7. Never let anyone sing or play with you unless you know they are good.
8. When there are few people walking in front of you, JAM. I've written dozens of songs this way.
9. Bring bottled water and Jolly ranchers for your throat.
10. Bring your cell phone with camera to record new song ideas so you won't forget them.
11. Do not accept booze from people unless its legal to have it in a bag and drink on the street.
12. Buy a Roland Cube Street PA/Amp.
13. Buy a cd carrier to sell cd's from your mic stand. cd caddy

Here's another tip...

If you teach guitar, have cards on hand with your phone number and email. Try to pick up some students while you're out playing!
