Festivals, Concerts and Jam Sessions / Special Session & Guests!
« on: September 06, 2010, 07:02:30 PM »
With no music last week, and none scheduled this week, I know that you are anxiously awaiting our session on Sep 8.  I have arranged something special for this session.  Tim May and his wife Gretchen are professional musicians that live in the Nashville, TN area.  They are on their way to a concert in KS and will spend the night at our house.  How convenient!  I invite you to Google "Tim May" or "Gretchen Priest"  (www.plaidgrass.net) to review their credentials.  As an instructor at Camp Bluegrass, I have enjoyed Tim's teaching and playing for more than four years.
Now, here's the deal.  We would like to have a "workshop/jam session" format.  My plan right now is for us to play around the circle, then to ask Tim and Gretchen to play several numbers.  I will have a better idea of the format when they arrive.  I am "suggesting" a $10/per person for this event... obviously you may donate more.  All proceeds will go to Tim and Gretchen.
Plan on arriving 7:00 - 7:15 and we'll start playing after that.  The "quit time" is open, or until I fall asleep.  We will have ice and mix and a few light snacks, everything else is on you.  I would like to have an idea of how many people I can expect, so please RSVP.
See you Wednesday week, Sep 8.

Directions:  I-440 to the Lonoke (Hwy 165 exit) exit, exit 7.  Go east 5 miles to Scott, turn right (south) on Hwy 161, go two miles south to Old River Drive and make a right turn.  We are on the left, about 1/2 mile down... 14614 Old River Drive.

Come spend a day or the weekend at Shangri La Resort on beautiful Lake Quachita.  Make your reservations through Bill Rath at brath@aristotle.net.  We will have a "warmup" session Friday night starting at 7:00 p.m.  Saturday morning you're on your own, and jammin' will begin around 2:00 p.m. with a break for dinner around 5:00, resuming around 7:00 p.m.  All jams will be in front of Cabin B, weather permitting.  Cabin F is still available, and there are still plenty of motel rooms, along with the "interior" cabins.  Don't miss this one!

Plans are afoot to host Steve Smith (http://www.desertnight.com/) in a House Concert.  Plans are not final, but the date is.  We're thinking about starting around 3 or 4 p.m.   Steve will play two sets, 45-60 minutes each.  We're thinking about a $15 cover charge and BYOB.  We'll finalize everything by mid-March.  I'm trying to get a non-binding head count, so email me if you are interested.

Steve Smith has been performing for nearly thirty years on mandolin, mandola, guitar and vocals in about as many types of musical situations as one can imagine. He has appeared as a solo artist, bandleader, an in-demand sideman and session player and producer in traditional bluegrass (his first love), old-time, Celtic, new acoustic jazz and chamber music. His deep Virginia roots and thirty years of traveling the country as a soloist, bandleader and sideman give him a hard driving unique instrumental sound coupled with a powerful tenor and delicate overtones.

Most recently Steve appeared on the latest release by guitarist extraordinaire Jim Hurst, “A Box of Chocolates” and produced the CD “Bungalow” by singer songwriter Bob Einweck, and the long awaited CD from Hard Road “Only So Fast” and the September 2008 release of the Alan Munde Gazette CD “Made to Last”

Smith has been involved in a number of theatrical productions including composing the score for the Sam Sheppard play “Curse of the Starving Class”. He honed his skills with a stint in music school studying 20th century composition and theory; most recently his music was used in the PBS film “The Bataan Death March, a New Mexico Story” and “Portraits of the Southwest”.

In addition to a regular solo touring schedule which has taken him from Florida to Alaska, the Caribbean to Europe, Smith tours with his group Steve Smith and Hard Road, The Alan Munde Gazette, Jim Hurst and Bill Evans and maintains a busy teaching and workshop schedule including ten years as mandolin instructor at Camp Bluegrass (www.campbluegrass.com), the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, Zoukfest in Santa Fe NM and the California Coast Music Camp along with a broad palette of recordings on mandolin, mandola, mandocello and guitar.
