Travis (fingerpickin') competition at Mt. View
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:45:03 PM »
In case it has not been posted already on this site., I'm pleased to note that Pickoids and friends made a BIG SPLASH at this annual competion at the Ozark Folk Center, held this year on May 15-16.  First place was taken by Danny Dozer from Batesville.  Our own "Mick-the-Pick, Micky Rigby took third.  One of the best musicians we know, Lyle Dent also competed, as a last-minute player and did a great job.  This event in honor of Merle Travis, one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century, attracts 'Travis-pickers' or 'thumb-pickers' from all over the country. Due to declining numbers of participants the rules were changed this year to allow for a wider range of 'fingerpicking' styles.  The winner, Danny, is appropriately considered "national champion", and scoring in the top 3 is a well deserved honor for Mick. We should all be proud of this showing. Don
